"My life here as an artist in Northern Vermont is guided by the natural cycle of the seasons. Now being summer, I'm in the flow. Long days and nights in the pottery studio-- my refuge for creativity and happiness. Time to throw lots of pots and challenge myself with mending form/design with function. I love to try new ways of embellishing the surfaces of my work, whether it be antique lace rolled in clay or a eucalyptus button on the base of a mug's handle. Never-ending possibilities with this medium which comes from Mother Earth. I try to achieve balance in my life, with working part-time in a local school, my family, and my home-studio. Art helps to fulfill my life-- it allows me to connect with my inner soul and those around me. My handmade pottery will hopefully be held and enjoyed by others for many years to come. I plan on working and playing in clay for a very long time."

"Making art is what I do and defines who I am. Earthenware clay is my medium of choice, throwing on the wheel or rolling slabs for tiles or mirrors. Over the past year, I have developed a style of stamping/applique decoration on many of my pots. In this show, I have a couple of pieces with scraffito and wax resist designs. Inspiration often comes from other artists as well as the beauty of the Vermont landscape. My seemingly chaotic studio is my refuge as is the forest outside it's door. I can't imagine not making pots..."

Art has been a continual journey of self-discovery as Barbara's work has evolved and changed over time. Over the years, she has explored many mediums with an emphasis on decorative patterns and designs. Most of her adult life, she has focused on working in clay. "The magic of creating an object of beauty, to hold and perhaps use, never cease to amaze me. Pottery making is a process, and its connection with the earth and its rhythmic cycles guides me in my everyday living as an artist." The natural beauty of Vermont, as well as multicultural symbolism and the students she teaches, has been a constant source of inspiration for Barbara.

Barbara Colgrove's life has always revolved around the visual arts. From the time she was a child, she knew her path was one of creative expression. Through art, she has learned to communicate with the world in a personal and expressive way. It has been a continual journey of self-discovery as her work has evolved and changed with time. The natural beauty of Vermont has been a constant source of inspiration for Barbara, as well as multicultural symbolism and the students she teaches. 

Barbara was raised in New York suburbs, and her background and training included attending Marlboro College, CCV, The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston where she received her BFA, and pottery making in Northern California. For the past 20 years, Barbara has lived with her family in their hand made house/studio in Enosburg Falls. "Art is autobiographical in terms of sharing our hearts and souls with each other."
