"Lately, I've been focusing on simplification-- trying to break down complicated structures into simple shapes, using a simple palette of the three primary colors, concentrating on just one form: one rose, one boat, etc. However, I continue to find changing the style of painting stimulating and usually follow a tight, detailed painting with one that is freer where the paint controls where I go rather than the other way around. Lately, I've been experimenting with painting on my iPad, not as a replacement for traditional media, but as another way to express ones' self. I find it freeing and a lot of fun. And it has the advantage of being able to be printed inexpensively."

"My motivation for painting is color-- to experience it, to experiment with it, and to use it as a tool to define form, create depth, and balance composition. I love contained forms and so use a lot of line to delineate and link the various element of a painting. Shadows also interest me-- the stark contrast between light and dark, and the characteristics of shadow that allow you to understand the object without its being present. My goal is not to paint representationally, but to simplify objects to the point where they become iconic, or almost 'super real.' This applies especially when I am painting flowers. However, whether or not my painting is objective or non-objective, I hope that the end result will be pleasing to the viewer and inspire at least a second look!"

BETH MCADAMS

Beth McAdams is a predominantly self-taught watercolorist since 1997. Color, form, and line-work are the elements of painting that are of the most interest to her. Her paintings are all abstractions to some degree, and are often non-objective. Sometimes, Beth will begin without an objective, but during the process of creating it, the work becomes and interpretation of an object or idea.
Beth tries to achieve depth in her paintings by applying many washes of transparent color, rather than by following the traditional rules of perspective. Her goal is to produce images that are reminiscent rather than realistic, and to simply share with the viewer her personal experience of creation.
